How to design for users who are overwhelmed or unsure

Many counsellors, coaches, and helpers work with people who arrive in a state of uncertainty. Their website should meet visitors where they are—gently, clearly, and without pressure.

Design can play a powerful role here.

Reduce cognitive load.
Simple navigation, minimal choices, and clear next steps help people relax.

Use calm typography and generous spacing.
Whitespace isn’t empty—it’s supportive. It gives people breathing room.

Write with clarity and compassion.
Warm, grounded language communicates care without overexplaining.

Avoid sensory overload.
No bright colours, no jarring transitions, no overly busy layouts.

Make the path obvious.
If your visitor is overwhelmed, clarity is a kindness. “Learn more,” “Book a session,” “Read about my approach”—simple and supportive.

Design can soothe or stimulate. For this audience, it should soothe.
